Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ) is a water-borne preservative made of copper, a fungicide and a Quaternary ammonium compound (quat), an insecticide which also augments the fungicidal treatment is a wood preservative that has come into wide use in developed countries following restrictions on CCA. ACQ contains high level of copper. ACQ treated timber is five times more corrosive to common steel. It is necessary to use double galvanized or stainless steel fasteners in ACQ timber. Use of fasteners meeting or exceeding requirements for ASTM A 153 Class D meet the added requirements for fastener durability. The US began mandating the use of non-arsenic containing wood preservatives for virtually all residential use timber in 2004. This will also provide long-term protection to wood exposed in soil/ ground applications. ACQ-D system based on Copper Combined with a quaternary ammonium compound is applied to wood by pressure treatment. Copper and Quaternary Ammonium compound two active ingredients are effective fungicides and termiticides. Together they provide protection against broad spectrum of decay fungi, borers and termites. Water-borne Alkaline Copper Quats are a combination of copper amine/ ammonia and quaternary ammonium compounds with a typical ratio of copper oxide to quat as 2:1. The quats used in ACQ formulations are also used in many household products and are environmentally benign and safe biocide. Amine or Ammonia are used to solubilize the copper carbonate in water. Ammonia is preferred for treatment of refractory species. Due to the metal corrosion concern in the treating facility, the chlorine anion quats have been substituted with carbonates in ACQ. There are different formulations of ACQ listed in the AWPA standards based on the variation in ratio of CuO to Quat but the most common ACQ are types C and D. ACQ-D has been commercially used since 1991 throughout USA, Europe, Australia and Asia for many commercial and backyard projects like landscaping, fences and decks etc. ACQ-D is a preferred alternative to traditional CCA pressure treatment to wood. |
